Competition commenced at 1 pm with a 3 km special stage at Amaroo that used parts of the circuit, motorcross track and hillclimb. It was somewhat shortened from the previous year but still included the big jump. A long transport took crews up to the more or less traditional run up Mount Sugarloaf and then, after a refuel in Newcastle, was an 8 km run through Wallaroo Forest. After the mealbreak at Stroud the event got under way in earnest with a series of 3 stages, two at 27 km and 57 km through Myall Forest and a further 53 km through Wang Wauk Forest before a brief service at Nabiac. A further 48 km special stage in Kiwarric took crews into Taree for a refuel and mealbreak. The run up to Port Macquarie comprised only two special stages, the first 30 km through Lansdowne Forest and the second a meandering 79 km through Kerewong, Lorne and Broken Bago Forests.

Two daylight stages were on offer at the start of the second day. The first was a 26 km run through Middle Brother Forest before a lengthy transport south to Taree and a short special stage through Kiwarric to the south of the town. After a mealbreak in Wingham, the night's action began with traditional run along Black Flat Lane. An arduous 108 km stage northwards over the Dingo Tops then took crews to the Oxley Highway for a service break. A shorter 26 km stage north of the highway ended at Myrtle Scrub for another service before the 95 km run back south, then eastwards, sharing part of the earlier stage before finishing west of Elands. A short run across Collings Pass lead to Comboyne before the night's final special stage, 80 km through Kerewong and Bulls Ground Forests, but barely using any of the roads used the previous night.

Day Three

The third day was a long loop up to Coffs Harbour and back. It began with a 19 km daylight run through Cairncross then another 19 km stage much further north through the Ingalba Forest. A third short daylight stage up Williams Hill Road (used in the WRC) took crews to Bowraville and then to the mealbreak at Missabotti. The night began with a challenging 45 km stage up into the rugged hills and back to Bellingen. A shorter 21 km stage then used Hydes Creek and Pine Creek Forests before passing through Coffs Harbour for the first time. Then came a 29 km stage through Lower Bucca Forest and a 50 km stage in Wedding Bells Forest before a refuel and mealbreak back at Coffs. A lengthy transport back to Bellingen took crews to the night's longest stage, 109 km using most of Horseshoe Forest Road and then peeling off down to Taylors Arm. The night's final stage was a long 91 km almost figure-8 stage through Ingalba and Tan Ban forests to just outside of Kempsey before the transport back to Port Macquarie.

Day Four

The final day would be the longest in terms of competitive kilometres and with three of the seven stages relatively short daylight ones, it was clear that the night would comprise long and arduous stages, including the events traditional 200+ km Mount Boss stage. But the competition began with two short daylight stages near to Port Macquarie, first through Burrawan Forest and then Broken Bago Forest, including the exhilarating Rollover Road. The mealbreak was in Wauchope at Timbertown before a lengthy transport out to Elands. The first night stage meandered up to the Oxley Highway through the Doyles River Forest. Then came the monster Mount Boss stage with its traditional mid-stage service at Forbes Rover. After a refuel in Kempsey came a super fast 75 km run through Collombatti and Tamban Forests. It was then south of Kempsey to the penultimate stage, almost 40 km through the Bellengarra Forest. Crews headed to the Port Macquarie airport for breakfast before heading back out to Cairncross for a final 9 km daylight stage. A parade through Port Macquarie marked the finish of the event.
